Lamine Yamal has declared himself fully fit ahead of Spain’s highly anticipated Round of 32 clash against Austria at the 2026 World Cup.

Speaking in an interview with COPE, as reported by Marca, the Barcelona winger dismissed concerns surrounding his recent injury and confirmed he is ready for the challenge ahead.

“I am fully prepared to play the full 90 minutes this Thursday,” Yamal said.

“I believe I will win the World Cup”

The Spanish star also spoke confidently about Spain’s ambitions in the tournament, insisting that results matter more than style during major competitions.

Responding to criticism of Spain’s performances during the group stage, Yamal stressed that winning remains the ultimate objective.

“What is our current level? Is it the same as the Euro level? The truth is that many times I played brilliantly and went home empty-handed. The most important thing in football is winning; if you play well you go to your room happy, but if you lose you go to your room sad.”

He continued by comparing different approaches seen during the tournament:

“It is true that we can improve, and we are much better than we have shown so far, but what is better? To play like the Netherlands and leave the tournament and go home, or to play like Paraguay and be happy in your room after qualifying?”

Yamal later made his ambitions even clearer when discussing his return from injury.

“The World Cup is a tournament completely different from anything else, and I was very happy to be able to play again. Whenever I participate in any competition, I always go into it thinking about winning the title, and that is why I believe I will win the World Cup this year.”

Spain focused on peaking at the right time

The teenager also reassured supporters about the atmosphere inside the Spain camp, insisting the squad remains united and focused ahead of the knockout stages.

“We all know that we can do better, but we are focused on going step by step until we reach our peak. Everyone is in good physical condition, and we must have confidence in ourselves because the decisive moments have begun now.”

He added that early performances will quickly be forgotten if Spain improve in the latter stages of the competition.

Handling pressure and criticism

Yamal admitted he rarely pays attention to criticism unless he performs well, insisting he understands the expectations surrounding him as one of Spain’s biggest stars.

“I fully understand that I am the player who generates the most enthusiasm, the player who is able to change the course of games. Pressure only appears when you are unable to do what is asked of you, but I am able to do it.”

The Barcelona winger also addressed the boos he sometimes receives from opposing supporters.

“I am not a player like Pedri who is loved by everyone. No matter how I celebrate with my teammates, I will be hated by many and loved by many others.”

Yamal compared the situation to the experiences of football icons Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, saying criticism is simply part of football.

Vinicius and Saïbari earn Yamal’s praise

Toward the end of the interview, Yamal named Vinícius Júnior and Ismael Saibari as two of the standout players of the current World Cup.

Joke aimed at Cucurella

The interview also included a lighter moment when Yamal jokingly referenced teammate Marc Cucurella and a potential move to Real Madrid.

“I already told him that he will start as a starter from day one, and that’s it, because I will devour him alive on the field.”
