World Cup 2026: ‘Weak’ Hugo Broos must be blamed for South Africa’s loss to Mexico – Mohamed Aboutrika

Former Egypt international Mohamed Aboutrika has launched a scathing criticism of South Africa head coach Hugo Broos following Bafana Bafana’s disappointing 2-0 defeat to Mexico in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

South Africa’s return to football’s biggest stage got off to a difficult start on Thursday as they were beaten by the North Americans in their Group A opener, leaving them with work to do in their quest to reach the knockout stages.

Speaking after the match, Aboutrika, one of Africa’s most celebrated footballers, did not hold back in his assessment of Broos’ tactical approach, accusing the Belgian coach of setting up his side too defensively.

“He’s afraid of the game. It’s the first match, so he’s scared. He went too defensive and right from the lineup, I knew he would lose,” said the former African Cup of Nations winner.

The ex-Al Ahly star expressed disappointment with South Africa’s overall performance, insisting that the team possesses enough quality to compete more effectively on the global stage.

“I put the blame on the coach. A disastrous match. I am shocked as an African because this team deserves to play much better with the qualities they have. Mexico isn’t that special,” he added.

South Africa’s task became significantly harder in the second half when the team was reduced to nine men. Midfielder Yaya Sithole and veteran playmaker Themba Zwane were both shown red cards, leaving Bafana Bafana severely undermanned as Mexico capitalised to secure all three points.

The result leaves South Africa under pressure ahead of their second group match, with Broos and his players now needing a positive response to keep their hopes of progressing alive.

Despite the setback, the South Africans will be eager to regroup quickly and put the disappointment behind them when they face the Czech Republic in their next Group A fixture. A victory could reignite their campaign and restore confidence after a frustrating opening-night defeat.

With criticism already mounting following the loss, all eyes will be on Broos and his squad to see how they respond in what is shaping up to be a crucial encounter for their World Cup ambitions.
