World Cup 2026: ‘We are with you’ – Black Stars send emotional message to Accra flood victims

The Black Stars have expressed profound sympathy for the victims of the devastating floods in Accra, taking a break from their preparations for Saturday’s 2026 World Cup Round of 32 match against Colombia to wish the victims well.

Speaking from the United States, Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz released an official statement on behalf of the squad.

“On behalf of myself, my technical team, and the entire Black Stars squad here in the United States, I want to express our deepest solidarity with the victims of the floods in Accra,” Queiroz stated.

The team addressed the families directly, acknowledging the severe human toll of the disaster.

“To the families who have lost loved ones, those who have been displaced from their homes, and everyone affected – we are with you,” the coach added, emphasizing that “football is secondary” when the nation suffers.

Torrential seasonal rains on June 28 and 29 triggered catastrophic flooding across the Greater Accra Region, leaving at least 12 people dead and submerging entire neighbourhoods.

The disaster knocked out critical power substations and trapped hundreds of residents, forcing emergency rescues amid heavily choked drainage systems.

Despite the tragedy back home, the team must continue its tournament run, drawing strength from the resilience of the Ghanaian people.

“We will carry the people of Accra in our hearts when we walk out at Kansas City Stadium on July 4” for the World Cup Round of 32 clash against Colombia, Queiroz affirmed.
