Morocco midfielder Amine Harit confirms Marseille salary talks but keeps details private

Morocco international Amine Harit has confirmed that he has held discussions with Olympique de Marseille over his salary but says he will not reveal details of the talks.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Marseille’s Ligue 1 trip to Rennes, Harit said he wanted to respect the club’s confidentiality while keeping his attention on performances on the pitch.

“There were discussions with the club, but out of respect for the club, I’m not going to talk about them in detail here,” Harit said.

“I have nothing to say on that subject. I have one year left on my contract and I’m very happy to be here. We’ll talk about contracts later. I think results are the most important thing right now.”

Harit contract runs until 2027

Harit’s current contract with Marseille expires in June 2027. He returned to the French club this summer after spending last season on loan at Turkish side İstanbul Başakşehir.

The midfielder’s comments come amid conflicting reports over discussions about his salary.

Reports in late August suggested Harit could accept a significant reduction in his wages, while L’Équipe later reported that the Moroccan and team-mate Geoffrey Kondogbia had rejected salary arrangements proposed by Marseille.

Harit did not confirm either account during Thursday’s press conference.

Marseille looking to reduce wage bill

The talks come as Marseille work to reduce their wage bill and strengthen their financial position.

Club president Stéphane Richard recently said the club had made significant progress in lowering salary costs during the summer, although Marseille had yet to reach their financial target ahead of further scrutiny from French football’s financial authorities.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his contract, Harit has returned to an important role under head coach Bruno Genesio.

The 29-year-old has featured in all three of Marseille’s Ligue 1 matches this season and provided an assist in their 3-2 defeat by Paris FC on Sunday.

Harit focused on having a big season

Harit also rejected suggestions that he has returned to Marseille with a desire for revenge following his loan spell in Turkey.

“There is no desire for revenge,” he said. “Last season was good for me because I rediscovered the pleasure of playing every weekend.”

“I’m very happy to be here and I want to have a big season, collectively and individually. I think we can achieve something good.”

Marseille travel to Rennes on Friday before opening their Europa League campaign away to Beşiktaş on September 17.
