World Cup 2026: South Africa’s performance against Mexico was disappointing – Ex-Germany defender Jerome Boateng

Former Germany international Jerome Boateng has delivered a scathing assessment of South Africa following their 2-0 defeat to Mexico in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the iconic Estadio Azteca.

The match, played on Thursday night, saw the hosts Mexico take full control after a tentative start from Bafana Bafana.

Goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez—scored in each half—sealed a deserved victory for the North American side and set the tone for their World Cup campaign.

South Africa struggled to find rhythm throughout the contest, repeatedly exposed by Mexico’s pressing and movement in the final third.

Defensive hesitancy and misplaced passes left them chasing the game, with little sustained attacking threat to trouble the hosts.

Speaking on beIN Sports after the match, Boateng did not hold back in his criticism, questioning both the tactical approach and overall intensity of the African side’s performance.

“I have African roots, and I was very disappointed by the performance of South Africa today. We didn’t see a soul or a performance that honours the African continent,” he said.

The former Manchester City and Bayern Munich defender went further, pointing to what he described as tactical shortcomings.

“Today, we only saw so many naive mistakes. The blame should go to the coach for being very defensive with the terrible lineup. We have the right to be angry with him,” Boateng added.

The defeat places them under immediate pressure in Group A, where qualification hopes now hinge on their next fixture against the Czech Republic national football team.
