World Cup 2026

Before the tournament began, confidence inside the Senegal camp was impossible to ignore.

Midfielder Pape Gueye made that clear when he stated that Senegal were not at the World Cup merely to “reach the semifinals,” but to challenge for the trophy itself.

Those ambitions, however, have quickly come under serious pressure after back-to-back defeats against France and Norway left the Lions of Teranga facing a difficult path to qualification.

A dramatic 3-2 loss to Norway has now placed Senegal on the brink of elimination, with only one group stage match remaining.

Pape Thiaw refuses to give up on qualification hopes

Despite the growing pressure, Senegal coach Pape Thiaw attempted to maintain belief after the defeat to Norway.

“We are not out of the tournament yet,” Thiaw said after the match. “The situation is difficult considering our current position, but we still have a chance. We must win the final game and improve our goal difference because the tournament could completely change if we qualify.”

While Senegal still have a mathematical chance of progressing to the round of 32, the mood around the team has shifted significantly in recent days.

Reports of internal tension emerge from Senegal camp

Senegal’s problems appear to extend beyond football matters on the pitch.

Several African media reports have pointed to growing tensions and organisational concerns surrounding the national team during the World Cup campaign in the United States.

According to reports, Thiaw has reportedly been coaching the national team for months without a formal contract or salary agreement in place.

Questions have also reportedly emerged regarding the delegation’s living arrangements during the tournament. Senegalese outlet Sport News Africa claimed the team travelled to the World Cup without an official chef, while some players allegedly became dissatisfied with hotel meals and chose to order food externally instead.

The same report suggested frustrations have also developed over management decisions and cost cutting measures affecting members of the national team staff.

AFCON memories return as scrutiny increases

The latest developments have revived memories of Senegal’s troubled Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Morocco earlier this year.

During the tournament, Senegal repeatedly raised concerns regarding organisation, security, and logistical arrangements. The competition eventually ended in controversy following the final against Morocco after Senegal walked off the pitch during the match, leading CAF to award Morocco the title by forfeit.

Months later, Senegal entered the World Cup speaking openly about becoming world champions.

Now, after two defeats and increasing scrutiny around the camp, survival in the competition has become the immediate priority rather than dreams of lifting the trophy.

Senegal face must win situation

With one group stage fixture remaining, Senegal still retain a chance of qualification if results go in their favour.

But for a side that arrived at the tournament speaking confidently about winning the World Cup, the reality has changed dramatically after a difficult start both on and off the pitch.
