World Cup 2026: Senegal defender Mamadou Sarr declares himself ready for Belgium showdown
Senegal defender Mamadou Sarr has declared himself ready to step up for the Lions of Teranga ahead of their crucial Round of 32 clash against Belgium at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The young centre-back spoke with confidence and calmness during Senegal’s pre-match press conference as the African side prepare for a decisive encounter against the Red Devils on Wednesday, 1 July.
Sarr stressed that representing Senegal at the World Cup is a dream for every footballer and insisted he remains fully prepared whenever head coach Pape Thiaw decides to call upon him.
“Every player dreams of playing in a World Cup. After that, it’s down to the manager. As soon as he calls on me, I’ll be ready,” Sarr stated.
The defender also reflected fondly on his previous spell in Belgium, revealing that his time there played an important role in his development as a player. Sarr spent six months with Belgian side R.W.D. Molenbeek, where he began attracting wider attention for his performances.
“I spent six months in Molenbeek. That’s where I made my name. So I have some wonderful memories of Belgium,” he added.
Senegal will face Belgium at Lumen Field in Seattle, with kick-off scheduled for 8 pm GMT.
The Lions of Teranga are aiming to continue their impressive World Cup journey after progressing from a difficult group stage campaign. With the knockout rounds now underway, competition for places in the starting lineup has intensified, but Sarr’s comments reflect the unity and readiness within the Senegal squad.
The clash against Belgium is expected to be one of the standout fixtures of the Round of 32, with both nations determined to secure a place in the next stage of the tournament being hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
