World Cup 2026: Senegal coach Pape Thiaw wary of Belgium threat ahead of round 32 showdown
Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw has underlined the importance of his side’s crucial Round of 32 clash against Belgium at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stressing the Lions of Teranga must deliver a near-perfect performance to keep their tournament hopes alive.
The West African giants will take on Belgium on Wednesday, 1 July, in a high-stakes knockout encounter as the race for a place in the last 16 intensifies at the Mundial being staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Speaking during his pre-match press conference, Thiaw admitted Senegal are facing one of the strongest teams left in the competition but praised his players for their determination and resilience throughout the group stage campaign.
According to the Senegalese tactician, reaching the knockout rounds from a highly competitive group is proof of the mentality and fighting spirit within his squad.
“This is a very important match. We’re up against a great team. We qualified as one of the best third-placed teams in a very strong group. The players have given their all to get this far,” Thiaw said.
Senegal progressed to the Round of 32 after battling through a difficult group phase, showing discipline and composure in key moments to secure qualification. The Lions of Teranga are now hoping to continue Africa’s strong showing at the tournament by eliminating the European heavyweights.
However, Belgium remain a dangerous opponent despite mixed performances earlier in the competition. The Red Devils possess a squad filled with experience, technical quality and attacking firepower, making them one of the favourites to advance from the tie.
Thiaw is expected to rely heavily on Senegal’s physical intensity, defensive organisation and quick transitions as they seek to unsettle the Belgian side. The Senegalese coach also called on his players to maintain focus and avoid costly mistakes in such a decisive encounter.
The match will be played at Lumen Field in Seattle, with kick-off scheduled for 8 pm GMT.
Victory for Senegal would mark another major statement for African football on the global stage, while defeat would bring their World Cup journey to an end.
