World Cup 2026: Security guard killed in tragic road accident
A tragic incident has cast a shadow over the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a young stadium security guard reportedly lost his life following a road accident in the United States, according to British newspaper The Sun.
The victim, identified as Aaron Avery, was working at SoFi Stadium when the incident occurred after a World Cup match, leaving the tournament community in shock.
Incident Occurred After Iran–New Zealand Match
Reports indicate that the fatal accident happened after the conclusion of the Iran versus New Zealand World Cup match on Monday.
Avery, who had only recently started working at the tournament, was said to be walking home after his shift when the tragedy occurred just a few blocks from his residence near Van Ness Street.
According to reports, the collision involved a white Tesla, and authorities have since arrested the driver in connection with the incident.
Family Devastated by Sudden Loss
The victim’s aunt, Norma Quinn, expressed deep grief over the sudden loss, describing the news as completely unexpected.
“I’m devastated because this was the last thing we could have ever expected to happen,” she said, reflecting the shock felt by the family.
Quinn also told CBS News that initial information suggested speed may have played a role in the crash, and that there were concerns the driver may have been under the influence of alcohol. Authorities have not officially confirmed these details.
Severe Injuries and Medical Response
Following the collision, Aaron Avery was rushed to hospital in critical condition.
Reports from a GoFundMe page set up in his name indicate that he suffered a traumatic brain injury and was placed on life support. He was later declared brain dead the following afternoon, according to the same reports.
Investigation Underway
Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the conduct of the driver at the time of the crash.
The arrest of the driver marks a key development as authorities work to establish the full details of the tragedy.
The incident has added a sombre note to the ongoing World Cup, which continues across multiple host cities in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
