World Cup 2026: Norway stun Brazil 2-1 after late Haaland double to reach quarterfinals
Norway booked their place in the World Cup quarterfinals after a dramatic 2-1 victory over Brazil at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, with Erling Haaland scoring twice in the closing stages to flip a tense Round of 16 contest.
In front of 80,663 spectators, Brazil dominated large spells of the game and created the better chances, but Norway’s resilience, organisation and clinical finishing proved decisive in a match that swung late and sharply.
The South Americans will feel aggrieved after posting higher expected goals and more shots, yet they were punished for missed chances and a lack of cutting edge in key moments.
Brazil start strong but Nyland sets the tone
Brazil began brightly in a 4-4-2 system, stretching Norway through wide areas and forcing early pressure in the final third.
Their best opportunity arrived in the 14th minute when Bruno Guimarães stepped up from the penalty spot, only to be denied by a crucial save from Ørjan Nyland.
The stop proved significant, not only preserving parity but also shifting momentum in Norway’s favour as they grew into the contest.
Norway, set up in a structured 4-3-3, relied on midfield control from Martin Ødegaard and Sander Berge to stabilise possession and prevent Brazil from sustaining pressure.
Schjelderup inspires late Norwegian surge
After a goalless first half, Norway’s substitutions proved decisive, with Andreas Schjelderup introduced at the break to add pace and creativity on the left.
Brazil continued to threaten through Vinícius Júnior and Endrick, while Neymar entered in the second half and later converted a stoppage-time penalty, but Norway struck first in the decisive phase.
In the 79th minute, Schjelderup delivered a precise cross from the left, and Haaland rose highest to head home the opening goal.
As Brazil pushed forward in search of an equaliser, the game became increasingly stretched, leaving space in behind their defence.
Norway exploited it in added time when Schjelderup again combined with Haaland, this time slipping a pass through for the striker to finish clinically with his left foot for 2-0.
Brazil’s late penalty reduced the deficit after Neymar converted from the spot, but it came too late to deny Norway a famous victory.
Brazil dominate numbers but lack efficiency
Despite the defeat, Brazil finished with superior underlying statistics, including 2.73 expected goals compared to Norway’s 0.84, as well as more shots and greater presence inside the penalty area.
They also created more big chances but were repeatedly denied by Nyland and wasteful finishing at key moments.
Norway, however, were far more efficient, converting their decisive opportunities while maintaining control of crucial defensive duels and second-ball situations.
Nyland and defensive discipline prove decisive
Nyland played a key role with a series of important saves, including the early penalty stop that set the tone for Norway’s performance.
At the other end, Alisson made several stops but could not prevent Haaland’s late double from deciding the tie.
Norway’s physical edge was also evident in aerial battles, where they consistently outperformed Brazil and limited the South Americans’ ability to dominate inside the box.
In the end, the contrast was clear: Brazil controlled much of the game, but Norway controlled the moments that mattered most, sending them into the quarterfinals and leaving the tournament favourites stunned.
