World Cup 2026: Noni Madueke backs England's squad depth to make the difference

England winger Noni Madueke believes the Three Lions’ strength in depth could prove decisive as they begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against Croatia in Dallas.

With England among the favourites to challenge for the trophy, competition for places in Thomas Tuchel’s squad is fierce. Madueke says that quality throughout the squad means even players on the bench can have a major impact on the tournament.

“I feel like we have such an amazing team, where everybody knows how good they are,” Madueke said ahead of the Group L opener.

“So it’s not like you’re going to be on the bench and you’re rubbish.

“It might be that the opponent suits one player better, or someone is in form.”

The Arsenal winger pointed to England’s recent friendly victory over Costa Rica as evidence of the squad’s depth, with substitutes making a significant impact after coming off the bench.

“But if you look at the last game (against Costa Rica), how the subs came on and won the game for us so easily, that’s the strength in depth we have. It’s going to be crucial for this time.”

Madueke could have an important role from the start against Croatia. With Bukayo Saka continuing to manage an Achilles issue, reports suggest the 24-year-old is in contention to start on the right wing. Several predicted line-ups have placed Madueke in the starting XI as Tuchel carefully manages Saka’s fitness during the tournament.

The former Chelsea winger has emerged as one of England’s most exciting attacking options thanks to his pace, direct running and ability to beat defenders in one-on-one situations. His performances have led many observers to believe he can play a major role for England during the World Cup.

England enter the tournament carrying high expectations as they seek to end a 60-year wait for World Cup glory. Tuchel has repeatedly called on his players to be brave and embrace the challenge, while captain Harry Kane has urged the squad to play without fear and leave the competition with no regrets.

The Three Lions face a difficult opening test against a Croatia side led by experienced stars such as Luka Modric, Mateo Kovacic and Ivan Perisic. However, Madueke believes England’s ability to change games from the bench could give them a crucial advantage as the tournament progresses.

With a packed schedule and demanding conditions expected throughout the World Cup, squad depth is likely to become increasingly important. For Madueke, England’s wealth of attacking talent means every player, whether starting or coming off the bench, has a role to play in the quest for a first World Cup title since 1966.
