Neymar admitted he was overcome with emotion after making his long-awaited return to the Brazil national team during their 3-0 victory over Scotland.

The forward revealed he shed tears alone in the dressing room after the match, describing the moment as one filled with relief and gratitude after being away from the Seleção for 981 days.

Neymar came on as a second-half substitute to make his first appearance for Brazil since October 2023, when he suffered a serious knee injury during a World Cup qualifying match against Uruguay.

The 34-year-old’s return had been uncertain after a lengthy recovery period and inconsistent performances, while a recent calf injury also prevented him from featuring in Brazil’s opening two matches of the tournament.

However, after regaining fitness, Neymar returned to the pitch to a warm reception from Brazilian supporters, who celebrated his introduction against Scotland. The victory also helped Brazil secure top spot in Group C.

“I went to the locker room, all alone, and I shed a few tears,” Neymar said after the match, explaining the emotions behind his return.

The forward, who remains Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals, is appearing at his fourth World Cup. Since his first tournament in 2014, he has recorded eight goals and four assists in the competition.

Neymar said returning to the national team felt different after such a long absence and acknowledged that the squad has changed during his time away.

“I’ve been away for a long time, it’s a different team today, I’m discovering it in a different way,” he added.

The comeback marked an important moment for a player whose international career had been interrupted by injury setbacks. His return gives Brazil another attacking option as they continue their World Cup campaign.

Brazil will now prepare for their Round of 16 match, where they will face the runners-up from Group F on Monday in Houston.
