World Cup 2026: Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi plays down favourites tag ahead of Netherlands clash
Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi says he is not paying attention to talks labelling the Atlas Lions as favourites ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup round of 32 showdown against the Netherlands.
The North African side will take on the Dutch on Tuesday, June 30, in a highly anticipated knockout fixture as the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico enters a decisive stage.
Speaking ahead of the encounter, Ouahbi insisted that public opinion and media predictions will have no impact on the outcome of the game, stressing that his team must prove themselves on the pitch.
“Whether we’re favourites or not, I’m not interested. That’s what people are talking about,” Ouahbi said during his pre-match press conference.
“What matters is what happens on the pitch. We’re respected, which is good, but we have to prove it on the pitch, not at a press conference.”
Morocco have earned praise for their performances at the tournament, especially after an impressive display against Brazil, which strengthened belief in their ability to challenge the top nations once again.
Despite the growing expectations, Ouahbi remains fully focused on the task ahead and believes another difficult test awaits his players against the Netherlands.
“We’ve already played a great match against Brazil, and tomorrow will be another great match,” he added.
The Atlas Lions will be aiming to continue their strong World Cup journey and secure a place in the next round, while the Netherlands will also be determined to keep their title hopes alive in what promises to be an intense and entertaining contest.
