World Cup 2026: Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi cites patience and faith for comeback win over Netherlands
Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi has praised his players’ patience, discipline and mental strength after the Atlas Lions secured a dramatic qualification to the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a penalty shootout victory over the Netherlands.
The North African heavyweights edged the Dutch side 3-2 on penalties after a tense 1-1 draw in regular and extra time in their Round of 32 clash on Tuesday at Monterrey Stadium in Mexico.
It was another unforgettable night for Morocco, who continue their impressive run in the tournament with a performance defined by resilience and belief under pressure.
The Netherlands took the lead in the 72nd minute through Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, putting Morocco under serious pressure as the match approached its closing stages. However, the Atlas Lions refused to surrender.
Defender Issa Diop became the hero of the night when he struck a dramatic equaliser in the 90+1 minute, sending the match into extra time and eventually a penalty shootout, where Morocco held their nerve to complete the comeback.
Speaking after the match, coach Ouahbi highlighted the tactical nature of the encounter and praised his team’s ability to stay focused throughout.
“It was a purely tactical match. The opponent respected us a lot and chose to play with five defenders at the back because he knows our style of play and how we control the ball,” Ouahbi told beIN SPORTS.
The Moroccan coach insisted that his team’s dominance in possession and overall attacking output justified their progression to the next round.
“We completely dominated the match, we had a high percentage of possession and more shots, so I consider the victory and qualification to be fully deserved,” he added.
Ouahbi also reflected on the moment Morocco went behind, acknowledging the challenge of facing a disciplined Dutch side that punished a counter-attacking opportunity.
“Unfortunately, we conceded a goal from a counter-attack while we were in possession, but we had the patience and belief in ourselves until we managed to come back again,” he explained.
Despite the pressure of knockout football, the Morocco coach emphasised the importance of adapting to the demands of tournament football, where results matter more than style.
“We must accept winning in this way, as every match has its own scenario, and we are now playing knockout matches,” he said.
Ouahbi also took time to acknowledge the emotional support from Moroccan fans around the world, crediting them as a driving force behind the team’s performances.
“The passion of Moroccans all over the world gives us energy and makes us continue the journey,” he said.
He concluded with pride in his squad’s achievement and dedication to the nation.
“Our adventure continues and we don’t want it to stop. I am proud of what the players have achieved, and we dedicate this victory to the King and the people.”
Morocco will now shift focus to their Round of 16 clash against Canada, scheduled for next Saturday evening, as the Atlas Lions aim to extend their remarkable World Cup journey even further.
