Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez has confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the final tournament of his international World Cup career as he looks to guide the Desert Foxes toward a historic achievement.

Speaking ahead of Algeria’s Round of 32 meeting with Switzerland, the veteran winger admitted the time was approaching for a new generation to take over the national team.

“Perhaps it’s time for me to pass the torch and stop. This will be my last World Cup, that’s for sure.”

The former Manchester City star remains one of Africa’s most influential footballers and is hoping to end his World Cup journey by helping Algeria reach new heights on the global stage.

Algeria chasing first knockout victory

Mahrez revealed that Algeria had already achieved one of their key objectives by progressing beyond the group stage, but stressed that the squad’s ambitions have grown even bigger.

“Our goal was to get past the first round, and we achieved it. Our country has never before won a knockout match in the World Cup.”

The Desert Foxes are now aiming to make history by recording their first ever victory in a World Cup knockout match.

Mahrez said the players fully understand the importance of the opportunity in front of them as Algeria seek to write a new chapter in the country’s football history.

Emotional message from Algeria captain

The Algerian skipper ended his remarks with an emotional appeal focused on national pride and collective ambition.

“Now we have to make it happen, for ourselves, for our families, and for our country, that is what matters most.”

Algeria will face Switzerland early on Friday morning in one of the most anticipated African fixtures of the Round of 32.

Supporters across the country are hoping Mahrez can inspire the team to an unprecedented achievement in what is set to be the final World Cup appearance of one of Algeria’s greatest footballers.
