World Cup 2026: Kylian Mbappe reveals France’s tactical failure behind semi-final exit
Kylian Mbappe has admitted France’s World Cup dream ended because they failed to execute their tactical plan against Spain, conceding that their semi-final defeat was a result of mistakes in both strategy and performance.
France’s hopes of reaching a third consecutive World Cup final were crushed on Tuesday night after Spain produced a commanding display to secure a 2-0 victory at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Mbappe, who had been one of the standout performers of the tournament with eight goals leading France’s attack, was unable to inspire a comeback as Spain controlled proceedings and exposed weaknesses in Didier Deschamps’ side.
The French captain described the defeat as a painful setback, admitting Les Bleus were unable to perform at the required level on football’s biggest stage.
“I don’t think we played the match we wanted to play – whether tactically, technically, or in terms of our overall performance level,” Mbappe told French broadcaster M6.
“And when you don’t do what you’re supposed to do in a World Cup semi-final, you don’t win,” the Real Madrid forward added.
Mbappe reveals where France went wrong
Mbappe explained that France’s plan was to disrupt Spain’s rhythm by applying pressure high up the pitch, knowing that allowing Luis de la Fuente’s team time on the ball would prove costly.
However, he admitted the plan failed as Spain comfortably found spaces and dictated the tempo of the match.
“Our goal was to press them high up the pitch to prevent them from settling into that slow, controlled rhythm – because when it comes to controlling the game, they are better than us. We failed to do that.”
The 27-year-old identified midfield as the area where France were most vulnerable, with Spain’s three-man setup of Rodri, Dani Olmo and Fabian Ruiz overwhelming France’s central pairing of Adrien Rabiot and Aurelien Tchouameni.
Mbappe revealed that the numerical disadvantage in the middle of the pitch made it difficult for France to compete and regain control of the game.
“We kept finding ourselves outnumbered 3-on-2 in midfield,” he said. “And against Spain, that’s a real problem…When you put it all together, the result is a defeat. It’s a huge disappointment.”
France forced to rebuild after shattered final hopes
The defeat ended France’s ambition of returning to the World Cup final after their triumph in 2018 and runners-up finish in 2022.
For Mbappe, who was aiming to lead his country into another historic final, the elimination was difficult to process, but he insisted the squad must respond positively.
“It was a dream for us to reach the final, to give our country the chance to keep dreaming and to make history,” he said.
The French forward acknowledged the disappointment within the dressing room but called on his teammates to accept the result and move forward.
“Now, it is something we have to face with our heads held high. I believe that when you win, you win with your head held high; so when you lose, you have to lose with your head held high, too.”
Mbappe admitted the pain of the defeat would take time to overcome, especially after coming so close to another World Cup final appearance.
“But right now, there is immense disappointment. I find it hard to put into words just how disappointed the squad and I are.”
Despite the heartbreak, the France captain believes the experience will serve as a lesson as the team begins preparations for the future.
“Yet even if it might seem a bit robotic at times, we have to pick ourselves up, go on vacation, and move on to the next chapter. Because football waits for no one. We have to start over, put this failure behind us, and learn from it.”
