First World Cup Meeting Between England And Ghana

This will mark the first-ever FIFA World Cup meeting between England and Ghana.

The two nations have faced each other only once before in an international friendly played at Wembley Stadium on 29 March 2011. That match ended in a 1-1 draw after goals from Andy Carroll and Asamoah Gyan.

Key Match Statistics

England remain unbeaten against African opposition at the FIFA World Cup, winning five and drawing three of their eight matches.

Ghana will become the eighth different African nation England have faced at the tournament.

The Three Lions are also playing only their second-ever match in Boston. Their previous visit came in 1993 when they lost 2-0 to the United States in a friendly encounter.

Ghana have managed to win two group-stage matches at a single World Cup tournament only once before, achieving the feat during the 2006 edition against Czechia and the USA. However, the Black Stars are winless in their last four World Cup matches against European opposition.

England will be chasing consecutive victories to begin a World Cup campaign for the fourth time in their history after previously doing so in 1982, 2006 and 2018.

There is also an interesting storyline surrounding Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz, whose heaviest World Cup defeat as a manager came against England in 2022 when his Iran side lost 6-2.

England produced impressive attacking numbers in their opening win over Croatia, finishing Matchday One with one of the highest shots-on-target totals in the tournament.

Players Chasing Historic Milestones

Harry Kane enters the fixture on the verge of another major England record after scoring twice against Croatia.

The England captain has scored five goals in five appearances against African opposition, including World Cup strikes against Tunisia and Senegal. Another goal against Ghana would see him move past Gary Lineker as England’s all-time leading scorer at the FIFA World Cup.

Jude Bellingham could also make his 50th appearance for England in the match. At 22 years and 359 days old, he would become the youngest player ever to reach that milestone for the men’s national team.

Jordan Pickford and John Stones are meanwhile in line to make their 14th World Cup appearances for England.

For Ghana, captain Jordan Ayew continues to play an influential role for the Black Stars. Against Panama, he recorded the highest number of high-intensity pressures by any striker on Matchday One and also became the oldest Ghanaian player to feature at the World Cup.
