World Cup 2026: ‘I am ready to play’ – Thomas Partey targets England test after turbulent week
Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey has insisted he is ready to return to action against England after missing the Black Stars’ opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 33-year-old was unavailable for Ghana’s Group D clash against Panama after being denied entry into Canada, a development that left Otto Addo’s side without one of its most experienced players for their tournament opener.
With a decisive encounter against England looming, Partey says he is prepared to step back into the team and help Ghana’s bid to reach the knockout stage.
Partey focused on football return
Speaking to reporters ahead of the high-profile meeting, Partey acknowledged the off-field challenges surrounding him but stressed that his attention remains firmly on football.
The former Arsenal midfielder declined to go into detail regarding his ongoing legal case in London, where he denies multiple rape and sexual assault charges.
Instead, he underlined his readiness to contribute on the pitch after a frustrating start to the tournament.
“I think for me now it’s part of football. Things happen outside football that you cannot control but for me now I feel OK, and I am ready to play.”
Partey’s potential return would provide Ghana with a major boost in midfield, bringing experience, composure and leadership to a side preparing for one of its toughest group-stage assignments.
Reunion with familiar faces
The England fixture could also see Partey come up against several former Arsenal teammates, including midfielder Declan Rice, in what promises to be one of the most intriguing individual battles of the match.
Having spent five years at Arsenal before leaving when his contract expired in 2025, Partey admitted he is looking forward to renewing acquaintances with familiar opponents on football’s biggest stage.
“I’m really happy to see them again. I hope they are going to bring their best and try to give ourselves also the opportunity to play against the best and try to compete and enjoy the game.”
His comments reflected a player eager to test himself against elite opposition despite the unusual circumstances that have surrounded his World Cup campaign.
Midfield battle awaits
As Ghana seek a positive result against one of the tournament favourites, Partey’s presence could be crucial in a contest likely to be decided in midfield.
The vice-captain’s experience at the highest level and his anticipated duel with Rice offer Ghana an important source of belief heading into the clash.
After being forced to watch from the sidelines against Panama, Partey now appears set to play a central role as Ghana attempt to keep their World Cup ambitions alive against England.
