World Cup 2026: Harry Maguire urges England to stay positive after Ghana draw
England defender Harry Maguire has called on the Three Lions to keep their focus on the bigger picture following their frustrating 0-0 draw against Ghana in Group L of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The result in Boston ended England’s perfect start to the tournament and continued a curious trend, with the Three Lions now drawing their second group-stage match at four consecutive major tournaments.
Despite the disappointment of failing to break down Ghana’s disciplined defence, Maguire believes there is no reason for panic.
“I think they’ll look back and say that, overall, we also drew in the second match against the United States at the last World Cup,” Maguire said.
“We were disappointed, but we knew we had control of the group. You play the third game, you win and everything is forgotten, then you move on to the knockout stages.”
The Manchester United centre-back is confident the squad will quickly move on from the setback and switch their attention to the final group match against Panama.
“So I don’t think they’ll be too downhearted. I think some guys will probably be disappointed with their individual performances. But, as a group, I’m sure tomorrow will be a new day and they’ll focus on Panama and going for the win.”
England entered the match full of confidence after their entertaining 4-2 victory over Croatia, but found it difficult to break down a well-organised Ghana side coached by Carlos Queiroz. The Three Lions dominated possession and territory but were unable to find a breakthrough, with captain Harry Kane missing their best chance late in the contest.
The draw leaves England top of Group L on four points and still in a strong position to qualify for the Round of 32. However, the performance reignited questions about their ability to unlock compact and defensive opponents, a challenge that has troubled England in several recent tournaments.
For Maguire, though, the priority is maintaining perspective. With qualification still firmly in their own hands, he believes a victory against Panama would quickly erase memories of the stalemate against Ghana and restore momentum heading into the knockout rounds.
England face Panama in their final group match knowing a win would secure top spot in Group L, while Ghana will take on Croatia in a crucial battle that could determine qualification.
