World Cup 2026: FIFA orders Egypt to remove iconic seven stars from jersey

Egypt have been compelled to alter their official playing kit for the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a directive from FIFA.

The ruling prevents the North African side from featuring the seven stars above their crest, a design element long associated with national pride and their record in continental football.

The decision applies ahead of their Group G opener against Belgium at the tournament, forcing the Egyptian Football Association to adjust its design in line with competition regulations governing branding and kit presentation.

Symbolic seven-star emblem removed

The seven stars, which represent Egypt’s record seven Africa Cup of Nations titles, have been one of the most recognisable features of the national team jersey. Their removal marks a significant visual shift for a side that has historically leaned on its continental dominance as part of its football identity.

The emblem has also been widely embraced by supporters as a symbol of Egypt’s status as the most successful nation in African football history. The change has therefore sparked debate among fans, many of whom view the alteration as a loss of heritage on the global stage.

Gold detailing also targeted

Beyond the stars, FIFA has also requested further modifications to the kit design. The governing body has instructed Egypt to remove gold-coloured lettering and numbering from their shirts, insisting on adjustments to ensure compliance with World Cup equipment and branding standards.

The gold accents have traditionally been used to reflect prestige and achievement, but will now be replaced with an approved alternative colour scheme for the tournament.

Focus shifts to Group G challenge

Despite the off-field controversy, Egypt national team are pressing ahead with preparations for their World Cup campaign. Drawn in Group G, they will face Belgium, Iran and New Zealand as they target progression to the knockout stages.

The tournament, organised by 2026 FIFA World Cup, begins for Egypt on June 15, with attention now shifting firmly to on-pitch matters as the team adapts to its revised identity on football’s biggest stage.
