World Cup 2026: Deniz Undav admits Germany must improve after Ecuador defeat
Germany forward Deniz Undav has urged his teammates to learn quickly from their disappointing 2-1 defeat to Ecuador, admitting that the South Americans deserved their victory after showing greater intensity and aggression.
Despite the setback in their final Group E fixture, Germany still finished top of the standings and secured a place in the Round of 16, where they will return to action on Monday.
Speaking to ARD after the match, Undav offered an honest assessment of Die Mannschaft’s performance.
“Ecuador was more aggressive and sharper than us. We have to learn from this and draw the right conclusions. We didn’t play vertically enough and didn’t create many chances. We need to play better and improve. But there’s no time to dwell on it, the next game is already on Monday.”
Germany had entered the encounter on the back of victories over Curaçao and Ivory Coast, already assured of qualification. However, Julian Nagelsmann’s side were second best for long periods as Ecuador’s pressing and physicality disrupted their rhythm.
The defeat also ended Germany’s 11-match winning streak and exposed concerns that had largely been hidden by their earlier results. Midfield control was lacking, while the team struggled to create clear-cut opportunities against a well-organised Ecuadorian side.
Undav, who had been Germany’s hero with a late double against Ivory Coast to seal qualification, was unable to inspire another comeback as Ecuador secured a famous victory and progressed to the knockout stages as one of the best third-placed teams.
The striker’s comments echoed those of teammate Jamal Musiala, who also acknowledged that Ecuador displayed greater hunger and determination throughout the contest.
Nevertheless, Germany remain in a strong position heading into the Round of 16 after topping Group E with six points. Nagelsmann’s men know that the margin for error has now disappeared, and Undav insists the lessons from the Ecuador defeat must be applied immediately if they are to challenge for a fifth World Cup crown.
