World Cup 2026: Brahim Diaz leads Morocco’s hopes in high-stakes France clash
Morocco star Brahim Diaz is expected to play a central role in the upcoming high-stakes 2026 World Cup quarterfinals clash against France.
The Real Madrid midfielder has rediscovered his confidence after overcoming a difficult period following his penalty miss in the Africa Cup of Nations final earlier this year.
Despite finishing the AFCON as the tournament’s best player and top scorer with five goals, Diaz faced heavy criticism after failing to convert a Panenka-style penalty in Morocco’s dramatic defeat to Senegal.
However, the 26-year-old has responded strongly on the biggest stage, becoming increasingly influential in Morocco’s World Cup campaign. His creativity, movement and ability to unlock defences have made him a vital part of coach Mohamed Wahbi’s plans.
Diaz has registered four assists at the World Cup, the most by an African player in the history of the tournament, including two assists in Morocco’s 3-0 victory over Canada in the Round of 16.
The playmaker’s improved performances have also earned praise from his coach, Mohamed Ouahbi, who has consistently backed him despite the pressure.
“He’s a very big player, a Real Madrid player, and he’ll give us a lot,” Ouahbi said.
With Morocco aiming to go beyond their historic semi-final appearance in 2022, Díaz’s form could prove decisive as the Atlas Lions prepare for another meeting with France.
Having embraced Morocco after switching allegiance from Spain in 2023, Díaz is now determined to repay the faith shown in him by leading the national team on its quest for World Cup glory.
