Evidence Makgopa earns plaudit from Benni McCarthy

South Africa legend Benni McCarthy has heaped praise on striker Evidence Makgopa for his strong all-round performance in the sides 1-0 win over South Korea, which secured their place in the round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Makgopa delivered a classic centre-forward display, using his physical presence to shield defenders, hold up play and create space for teammates during South Africa’s attacking phases.

His contribution proved vital as South Africa national football team secured a hard-fought win that confirmed their qualification for the knockout stage of the tournament.

However, Benni McCarthy has eulogized the forwards outstanding display against Korea, describing him as the focal point of the team’s attacking structure and highlighting his chemistry with emerging star Relebohile Mofokeng.

“I think he was the focal point for South Africa. He didn’t really allow the Korean defence a lot of breathing space because him and Rele, they kind of worked really well together as a two,” McCarthy said on Sporty TV.

McCarthy, however, noted that while Makgopa’s overall performance was impressive, the striker was unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet.

“It was just a shame, the performance that he had, he didn’t score a goal because that would have been good,” he added.

The former Manchester United and Porto striker stressed the importance of strikers combining hard work with goals, saying finishing remains the ultimate reward for a centre-forward.

“As a coach, me I want to look at my striker and be like yes you’re doing a lot of unbelievable hard ground work but sacrificing for the team… but when you score you give yourself that cake also,” McCarthy explained.

Despite not scoring, McCarthy insisted Makgopa’s contribution was outstanding and essential to South Africa’s victory.

“He was incredible for South Africa today,” he concluded.

South Africa’s win over South Korea has boosted confidence in the squad as they prepare for a demanding round of 32 clash against Canada on Sunday at 9pm South African time.

Coach Hugo Broos is expected to continue relying on Makgopa’s physical presence and link-up play as Bafana Bafana aim to extend their impressive World Cup run.
