World Cup 2026: Belgium coach reveals Folarin Balogun’s classy gesture after FIFA ban controversy

Belgium head coach Rudi Garcia has revealed details of his post-match exchange with United States striker Folarin Balogun after a dramatic World Cup last-16 encounter in Seattle.

Balogun started for the co-hosts as the United States suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Belgium, with Charles De Ketelaere scoring twice alongside goals from Hans Vanaken and Romelu Lukaku.

The match came amid a storm surrounding Balogun’s availability after FIFA overturned his one-match suspension from the United States’ previous victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The decision had triggered criticism from Belgium and UEFA, with Garcia openly questioning the move before kick-off.

“I didn’t know that at the World Cup, the 5th of July is actually the first of April — it’s April Fools’ [Day],” Garcia said.

“We are not defending the national team or the federation, we are defending football with its ethics and integrity.”

Balogun approaches Garcia after heated build-up

Despite his strong criticism of the decision, Garcia made it clear that he did not hold any resentment towards Balogun, insisting the Monaco forward was not responsible for FIFA’s ruling.

After the final whistle, Balogun approached the Belgian coach to discuss the situation, a gesture Garcia appreciated.

“Folarin Balogun came to talk to me,” Garcia said in his post-match press conference.

“I liked that. It’s not his fault. He is not the one to blame, and I told him that. I appreciate that he came over to talk to me.”

The moment provided a contrast to the tension that surrounded the fixture before kick-off, with the controversy focused on FIFA’s decision rather than the player himself.

Lukaku celebration adds another layer

The match also produced another talking point when Lukaku appeared to celebrate his stoppage-time goal by copying United States President Donald Trump’s famous dance routine linked to the song “Y.M.C.A.” by the Village People.

Belgium’s official social media account later added further fuel to the conversation by posting a picture of Lukaku with the caption: “Overturn this,” appearing to reference the Balogun suspension decision.

The social media post followed days of debate after FIFA reviewed the striker’s red card incident, which was reportedly brought to the organisation’s attention after Trump personally requested a review.

UEFA criticised the decision, describing the intervention as unacceptable, while the Royal Belgian Football Association said it was surprised by FIFA’s action.

Balogun focused on football despite controversy

Balogun, however, insisted the controversy did not distract him from his responsibilities on the pitch.

“When that decision’s overturned, of course it’s going to be controversial,” he said.

“So for me, it’s something that it didn’t really surprise me too much. But as a player, my job is just to go out there and focus on my job.”
