World Cup 2026: Algeria legend Rabah Madjer backs Morocco to mount a strong challenge
Algerian football icon Rabah Madjer has thrown his weight behind Morocco to mount a strong challenge at the 2026 World Cup.
Madjer pointed to Morocco’s historic achievement at the 2022 tournament, where they became the first African and Arab nation to reach the semi-finals, as evidence of the team’s quality and growing stature in world football.
Speaking to the media, the former Algeria star noted that Morocco will no longer enjoy the element of surprise that helped fuel their memorable run in Qatar. Instead, he said opponents now view the Atlas Lions as one of the most respected teams outside football’s traditional powerhouses.
Despite being drawn in a demanding group alongside Brazil, Scotland and Haiti, Madjer remains confident that Morocco possess the quality and experience required to progress to the knockout stages.
According to the Algerian legend, the clash with Brazil will provide the clearest measure of Morocco’s ambitions and ability to compete with the world’s elite. He also warned that Scotland’s organisation, intensity and tactical discipline could make them dangerous opponents.
Madjer added that Haiti should not be underestimated, arguing that a team playing without expectations can often prove difficult to contain in major tournaments.
His comments underline the growing belief across African football that Morocco are capable of building on their recent success. With a settled coaching structure and a squad packed with talent and international experience, the Atlas Lions are increasingly being viewed as genuine contenders to make another significant impact at the World Cup.
As preparations continue for the tournament, expectations remain high that Morocco can once again challenge the established powers and reinforce their status as one of Africa’s leading football nations.
