World Cup 2026: Alan Shearer predicts comfortable England victory over Ghana

England legend Alan Shearer has backed the Three Lions to continue their impressive start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, predicting a convincing victory over Ghana in Tuesday’s crucial Group L encounter.

Fresh from England’s entertaining 4-2 win over Croatia in their opening match, the former Newcastle United striker believes Thomas Tuchel’s side possess too much quality for the Black Stars and has forecast a 3-0 triumph in Boston.

Speaking in a video shared by BBC’s Match of the Day, Shearer made his prediction with confidence.

“I am confident that England will go into the game and win it. My prediction is England 3-0 Ghana.”

England enter the contest in high spirits after producing one of the most exciting performances of the opening round. Harry Kane scored twice, while Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford also found the net as the Three Lions overcame a tough Croatian side to claim all three points.

That attacking display appears to have convinced Shearer that England are well-positioned to challenge for the trophy and secure another victory against Ghana.

The former England captain pointed to the squad’s depth as one of its biggest strengths. Even with several attacking stars starting on the bench against Croatia, Tuchel was able to introduce players capable of changing the course of the match.

Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford combined for England’s fourth goal, while Morgan Rogers is another player Shearer believes could make a major impact as the tournament progresses.

England know a victory over Ghana would guarantee qualification for the Round of 32 and could even secure top spot in Group L if Croatia avoid defeat against Panama.

However, Ghana arrive with confidence of their own after opening their campaign with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama. Highly rated FC Nordsjaelland midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi scored the winning goal deep into stoppage time to hand the Black Stars a valuable three points.

Despite the victory, Ghana were out-possessed by Panama and spent long periods defending, something Shearer believes could prove problematic against an England side packed with attacking talent.

The Three Lions also carry a strong historical record into the fixture. England have never lost to an African nation at the World Cup, winning five and drawing three of their previous eight matches against teams from the continent.

Nevertheless, Carlos Queiroz’s side will view the match as an opportunity to produce one of the shocks of the tournament. With players such as Thomas Partey, Antoine Semenyo, Ernest Nuamah and Inaki Williams capable of hurting opponents on the counterattack, Ghana will hope to frustrate England and take advantage of any defensive lapses.

Fans from both nations are eagerly anticipating what could be one of the standout matches of the second round of group-stage fixtures.

While Shearer expects England to cruise to victory, the Black Stars will be determined to prove him wrong and take a significant step towards the knockout rounds.
