Women’s U20 World Cup: Argentina thrash Benin as Brazil qualify

Argentina ended Benin’s hopes of building on their opening-day draw with Mexico by claiming an emphatic 8-0 victory in the Women’s U20 World Cup in Poland.

The result was the most decisive of Tuesday’s second round of group-stage matches and left Benin with a heavy defeat after their encouraging start to the tournament. The Amazones had begun their campaign by sharing the points with Mexico, but were unable to reproduce that performance against Argentina.

Argentina’s victory came in Group A, where Poland also secured three points by beating Mexico 2-1. The hosts’ success means the group standings remain finely balanced after the second set of matches, while Mexico suffered their second result without a win.

The day’s other major development came in Group B, where Brazil defeated Canada 3-0 to make it two wins from two matches. That victory confirmed Brazil’s qualification for the next stage of the competition.

Brazil had already made a strong start to the tournament, and their success against Canada maintained their perfect record in the group. Canada, meanwhile, were unable to prevent Brazil from taking control of the contest and strengthening their position in the race to progress.

England also revived their campaign with a convincing 5-1 win over Tanzania. Having endured difficulty in their opening match, England responded with a substantial victory to move back into contention in Group B.

For Tanzania, the defeat was their second in as many matches. Their loss leaves them without a win after the opening two rounds, while England’s five-goal performance provided a significant boost to their hopes of reaching the next phase.

Tuesday’s results were:

– Benin 0-8 Argentina – Brazil 3-0 Canada – Poland 2-1 Mexico – England 5-1 Tanzania

The second round of group fixtures therefore produced contrasting outcomes for the teams involved. Argentina and England recorded emphatic victories, Brazil secured qualification with another win, and Poland came through a close match against Mexico.

Benin and Tanzania both suffered their second defeats of the tournament, while Mexico were beaten after drawing with Benin in their opening game. Brazil became the first team mentioned in Tuesday’s results to confirm their place in the next stage, following their victory over Canada.
