Wales snatch late draw to extend Ghana’s winless run ahead of World Cup 2026
Ghana’s Black Stars remain without a victory in their last six matches after being held to a 1-1 draw by Wales in an international friendly on Tuesday night, raising fresh concerns ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The encounter at Cardiff City Stadium was an important test for the Black Stars as they continued their preparations for the global tournament. Despite showing signs of improvement, Ghana were unable to secure the win they desperately needed.
Ati-Zigi Stands Firm Early On
Wales began the match on the front foot and looked dangerous in the opening exchanges. The hosts created two clear opportunities within the first 15 minutes, but goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi produced a pair of excellent saves to keep Ghana in the contest.
His early heroics allowed the Black Stars to grow into the game after a shaky start, with both teams eventually heading into halftime level after a goalless first half.
Yirenkyi Makes His Mark
Ghana emerged from the break with renewed energy, and head coach Carlos Queiroz’s tactical adjustments quickly paid dividends.
Substitute Caleb Yirenkyi, introduced in the second half, broke the deadlock in the 66th minute. The young midfielder reacted quickest inside the box to finish off a move created by Ernest Nuamah, giving the Black Stars a deserved lead.
The goal marked Yirenkyi’s first senior international strike and appeared to put Ghana on course for a morale-boosting victory.
Late Heartbreak for the Black Stars
With Ghana controlling large portions of the second half, a first win in six matches seemed within reach. However, Wales had other ideas.
The hosts struck late in the game to restore parity, denying the Black Stars victory and ensuring the friendly ended in a 1-1 draw.
The result extends Ghana’s winless streak to six matches, leaving Queiroz and his coaching staff with plenty to work on as the World Cup draws closer.
Attention Turns to Jamaica
The Black Stars will have another opportunity to build confidence when they face Jamaica on June 10 in their final warm-up match before the World Cup.
With the tournament fast approaching, Ghana will be eager to end their poor run of results and carry positive momentum into their opening World Cup fixture.
