Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has been taken to hospital after collapsing while watching a training session involving the club’s second team on Friday.
The 40-year-old Belgian is in a stable condition, according to reports from Germany, but his illness comes only two days before Bayern’s Bundesliga match against Freiburg on Sunday.
The club said Kompany was receiving medical tests and would remain under medical supervision. His coaching staff will take charge of training and matches until further notice.
“Vincent Kompany required medical attention after collapsing during an FC Bayern reserve team training session on Friday,” Bayern said in a statement.
“The first-team head coach was watching the second string’s session.
“Kompany is undergoing thorough examinations in hospital and will remain under medical care.
“His coaching staff will oversee training and match activities until further notice.”
Kompany had already been suffering from a viral illness before he was admitted to hospital. That illness prevented him from attending Bayern’s media briefing on Tuesday ahead of their UEFA Champions League meeting with Arsenal.
Assistant coach Aaron Danks represented him at that news conference.
Despite his health problems, the former Manchester City and Belgium defender was on the touchline for Bayern’s match against Arsenal on Wednesday.
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl said the club’s priority was Kompany’s recovery.
“Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority. We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure his speedy recovery,” Eberl said.
“Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and all the time he needs.
“His coaching team, in whom we have complete confidence, will take over his duties. All of us at FC Bayern wish Vinnie a speedy recovery.”
