AFCON 2027 qualifiers: South Africa face Guinea in crucial Group D opener

South Africa have named a 38-man provisional squad for their two Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Kenya in November 2026.

The squad, announced ahead of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, includes a strong contingent of players from Mamelodi Sundowns, alongside representatives from Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and several clubs based outside South Africa.

Ronwen Williams, Sipho Chaine and Ricardo Goss are among the goalkeepers named, while the defensive options include Aubrey Modiba, Thapelo Morena, Samukele Kabini and Mbekezeli Mbokazi.

In midfield, Tebogo Mokoena and Lebohang Maboe headline the domestic contingent, with the squad also featuring players competing in Europe and other overseas leagues.

The forward line includes Iqraam Rayners, Cassius Mailula, Oswin Appollis, Tashreeq Matthews and Relebohile Mofokeng, giving South Africa a range of attacking options as preparations begin for the November fixtures.

Several players based abroad have also been included in the provisional selection, among them Lyle Foster of Houston Dynamo in the United States, Luther Singh of AEL Limassol in Cyprus, Thalente Mbatha of Orlando Pirates and Luke Le Roux of Cercle Brugge in Belgium.

The selection will provide the technical team with an opportunity to assess its options before finalising the squad for the two encounters against Kenya.

South Africa will be looking to make progress in the qualification campaign as they seek a place at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

The provisional list is expected to be trimmed before the matches, with the final selection determining the players who will be available for the two qualifiers.

The fixtures against Kenya will be important for both sides as they compete for qualification to the continental tournament, with South Africa aiming to build a squad capable of challenging for a place at the finals.
