Vincent Kompany backs Bayern Munich to hit top gear despite back-to-back draws

Bayern Munich are close to reaching their best level despite dropping points in their last two matches, with Vincent Kompany insisting his players remain “sharp and motivated” ahead of Saturday’s Bundesliga clash against RB Leipzig.

The German champions have endured a frustrating spell, drawing 2-2 with Augsburg before being held to a 3-3 result by Norwegian side Viking in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Both matches exposed defensive weaknesses and missed opportunities, forcing Bayern to fight back from behind to avoid defeat. However, Kompany believes the results do not fully reflect his team’s progress, pointing to their attacking output as evidence that they are approaching their peak.

Bayern currently sit third in the Bundesliga, two points behind joint leaders Freiburg and Borussia Dortmund, and face a demanding run of fixtures that could shape their season.

“We want to attack,” Kompany told a press conference.

“We have the feeling that there are a lot of things behind the perception of these two results. I have the feeling it is just before we show our very best version.”

Kompany highlights Bayern’s attacking threat

Despite their recent struggles, Kompany remains encouraged by Bayern’s ability to create chances. The former Manchester City captain believes greater efficiency in front of goal could quickly transform their performances and results.

“In the last two matches we shot 50 times on goal. If we do a few things better then we are not too far from our very best version,” he added.

The statistics underline Bayern’s attacking intent, although their inability to convert opportunities consistently has prevented them from securing victories.

Their defensive shortcomings have also attracted attention, particularly after Augsburg scored the fastest goal in Bundesliga history during their 2-2 draw.

Against Viking, Bayern again conceded three goals, raising further questions about their ability to maintain control against opponents who exploit their defensive lapses.

Kompany, however, appears confident that his players can address those problems as they prepare to face Leipzig, who will provide another stern test of Bayern’s title credentials.

The Belgian wants his side to turn their attacking dominance into more convincing performances, with Saturday’s encounter offering an opportunity to respond to their recent setbacks.

Bayern embrace demanding run of fixtures

The Leipzig clash begins a crucial period for Bayern, who will subsequently face Arsenal in the Champions League before meeting Bundesliga leaders Freiburg.

A German Cup second-round tie against Magdeburg will follow, ahead of the eagerly anticipated Der Klassiker against Borussia Dortmund on October 31.

The sequence of matches will test Bayern’s depth, consistency and ability to deliver against leading opponents across multiple competitions.

Rather than viewing the demanding schedule as a source of concern, Kompany believes such fixtures offer his players an opportunity to create defining moments in their careers.

“These moments that some people think might be difficult we say these are the best moments you can have in your career. If you win these matches then you have created some moments,” he said.

“We are sharp and motivated… we look forward to these matches to measure ourselves against the best.”

Kompany challenges players to respond on the pitch

Kompany also praised the commitment shown by his squad during training, suggesting the players understand the importance of responding to recent disappointments through their performances.

“The lads reach the limit in every training session and it is fun to watch. They know it is now best to talk on the pitch,” he said.

For Bayern, the immediate priority is to rediscover the winning form expected of the Bundesliga champions while tightening up defensively.

Their recent draws have raised concerns, but Kompany remains convinced that his team is approaching its best level.

Victory over Leipzig would provide a timely boost before the challenges against Arsenal and Freiburg, while also strengthening Bayern’s position in the Bundesliga title race.

With several major tests approaching, Kompany’s confidence will now need to be matched by results on the pitch.
