Serhou Guirassy ruled out of Borussia Dortmund clash against Elversberg with thigh strain
Borussia Dortmund will be without Serhou Guirassy for Saturday’s Bundesliga home encounter against SV Elversberg after the striker suffered a thigh strain during their Champions League victory over Real Betis.
The 30-year-old Guinea international picked up the injury during Wednesday’s 2-1 win against the Spanish side and was forced off in the 34th minute after initially attempting to continue.
Dortmund head coach Niko Kovac confirmed the striker’s absence during Friday’s press conference, revealing that medical examinations had identified a muscular strain.
“Serhou has a strain. He will therefore not be available tomorrow,” Kovač confirmed.
The extent of Guirassy’s injury remains unclear, with Dortmund monitoring his recovery to establish when he can return to competitive action.
Guirassy unlikely to join Guinea for international duty
The striker could also miss Guinea’s upcoming international fixtures after his injury raised doubts about his availability during the November international break.
Kovač revealed that Dortmund are maintaining close communication with the Guinean Football Federation regarding the situation, with the expectation that the forward will remain in Germany for treatment.
“We are in very good communication with the federation. It will probably be the case that he doesn’t travel and stays here. We will discuss that further with the federation,” the Dortmund manager explained.
The BVB coach remains hopeful that Guirassy will recover in time to feature again after the international break.
“We hope that he will be available again after the international break. We will see exactly when that will be,” Kovač added.
Dortmund await Guirassy’s return
Guirassy’s absence represents a setback for Dortmund, considering his importance to their attacking department.
The Guinea international has scored eight goals in 14 competitive appearances this season, establishing himself as one of the team’s leading attacking threats.
Fabio Silva and Maximilian Beier are among the options available to Kovač as Dortmund prepare to host Elversberg at Signal Iduna Park.
The German side will be hoping to secure all three points while awaiting the return of their leading striker.
