Victor Munoz rescues Liverpool point against Nottingham Forest

Liverpool were held to a 2-2 draw by Nottingham Forest at Anfield after Victor Munoz scored a late equaliser in Andoni Iraola’s first Premier League home match in charge of Forest.

The result extended Liverpool’s wait for their first league victory of the season, with the Reds taking two points from their opening two matches under Iraola. Forest had looked on course for a notable away win after Morgan Gibbs-White converted a second-half penalty to put the visitors 2-1 ahead.

Gibbs-White’s spot-kick came in the 70th minute after Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson brought down Neco Williams inside the penalty area. The Forest captain made no mistake from 12 yards, giving his side the advantage for the second time in the match.

Liverpool, however, responded through Munoz eight minutes later. Making his first start for the club, the newcomer created space for himself on the edge of the box before turning and striking powerfully. His effort beat the goalkeeper and went in off the underside of the crossbar to secure a share of the points.

Forest had taken the lead in the 24th minute through Dan Ndoye, who completed a quick counter-attack with a composed finish into the bottom corner.

The move began with goalkeeper Matz Sels sending a long ball forward. Gibbs-White then played Ndoye through, allowing the Swiss forward to advance into the area before calmly slotting the ball beyond Alisson.

Liverpool thought they had drawn level before half-time through Florian Wirtz, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

They eventually equalised in the 60th minute when Alexander Isak finished from close range. Cody Gakpo escaped his marker on the left and drove a low cross across the face of goal. Two Forest defenders failed to connect with the delivery, leaving Isak with the simple task of turning the ball into an unguarded net.

Despite Liverpool’s pressure, Forest regained the lead through Gibbs-White’s penalty and appeared set to claim all three points. Munoz’s late intervention ensured the visitors instead left with one point, while Liverpool were forced to settle for another draw.

The match was Iraola’s first Premier League home game in charge of Nottingham Forest, following his appointment this summer. The club made the change after finishing fifth last season under Arne Slot, a disappointing outcome that came after Liverpool had won the 2025 Premier League title and spent £446m the previous year.

Liverpool’s failure to win either of their first two league games marks an unexpectedly slow start under their new manager. Forest, meanwhile, will take encouragement from their attacking display and their ability to twice take the lead at Anfield, although Munoz’s late goal denied them victory.
