CAF Confederation Cup final
USM Alger etched their names into African football history with a heart-stopping 8-7 penalty shootout victory over Zamalek to claim the 2026 CAF Confederation Cup title.
Following a grueling second leg at the Cairo International Stadium that ended 1-0 in favor of the hosts, the aggregate score stood deadlocked at 1-1, forcing the match into a high-stakes lottery from the spot.
The atmosphere in Cairo was electric, with over 75,000 fans creating a cauldron of noise that initially seemed to unnerve the visitors from Algiers. Zamalek capitalized on this early momentum, erasing USM Alger’s first-leg advantage within the opening twenty minutes.
A defensive lapse allowed the Egyptian giants to strike first, sending the home crowd into a frenzy and setting the stage for a tactical chess match that spanned the remainder of regulation time.
Despite the early setback, USM Alger showcased the defensive resilience that has defined their continental campaign. Having won the first leg 1-0 in Algiers thanks to a dramatic 98th-minute penalty by Ahmed Khaldi, the Algerians knew that a single goal on the break would likely seal the trophy.
However, Zamalek’s backline, even without the suspended Mahmoud Bentayg, remained disciplined and thwarted several counter-attacking opportunities. As the match progressed into the final stages, fatigue began to set in, but neither side could find the decisive blow to avoid penalties.
The shootout itself was a masterclass in composure and mental fortitude.
Both teams converted their opening salvos with clinical precision, pushing the score to 7-7 as the pressure reached a breaking point.
The climax arrived when USM Alger’s goalkeeper produced a stunning save to deny Zamalek’s eighth kicker, sparking wild celebrations among the small pocket of traveling Algerian supporters. Stepping up for the final kick, USM Alger remained calm to slot the ball home and secure an 8-7 shootout win.
This victory marks a monumental achievement for the club, reclaiming the trophy they last held in 2023 and denying Zamalek a successful defense of their 2024 title.
For the Egyptian side, it was a night of immense frustration, as their early dominance failed to yield a second goal that would have secured the trophy outright. USM Alger now stands atop the podium, celebrating a triumph built on grit, discipline, and nerves of steel.
