Trabzonspor decline €15 Million price tag for Onuachu
Turkish club Trabzonspor have confirmed that they are unable to meet Southampton’s €15 million asking price for Nigerian international striker, Paul Onuachu. Despite being keen on retaining the forward after a successful loan spell, the club has clarified that they cannot afford the financial demands set by the Premier League side.
Onuachu made a significant impact during his loan at Trabzonspor, scoring 15 goals in 21 matches in the Turkish Super Lig, as well as netting twice in four Turkish Cup appearances during the 2023/24 season.
His impressive form saw the Turkish outfit express a strong desire to secure his services permanently.
However, Southampton’s valuation has proven to be a stumbling block in negotiations.
Trabzonspor president Ertuğrul Doğan revealed the club’s position during an interview with NTVSpor, explaining that their financial constraints prevent them from matching Southampton’s demands.
“Onuachu was a player who made a significant contribution while on loan with us last season,” Doğan stated.
“However, his club is firm in their valuation, demanding around €15 million.
We have offered €8 million, including bonuses, but Trabzonspor cannot commit to paying €15 million for any player at this time.”
Doğan further elaborated on the club’s approach to transfers, noting that high fees could only be justified for younger players with long-term potential.
“For a player who is 20 to 22 years old, such an investment could be considered based on the coach’s request.
However, Onuachu is 30 years old, and it doesn’t make sense for us to spend that much on a player of his age,” he explained.
The Trabzonspor president’s comments suggest that the club is unlikely to increase their offer, with just days remaining before the Turkish transfer window closes on 13 September.
“The situation is clear. We have just two or three days left, so we will wait and see what happens,” Doğan concluded.
It remains uncertain whether Southampton will reconsider their valuation of the striker or if Onuachu’s future will lie elsewhere.
The Nigerian forward, who joined Southampton in January 2023, struggled to make an impact in the Premier League, which eventually led to his loan move to Turkey.
While his performances at Trabzonspor have reignited interest in his abilities, the financial realities of a potential permanent transfer could stand in the way.
As the clock ticks down on the transfer window, both clubs will need to reach a swift resolution if Onuachu is to remain in Turkey for the upcoming season.
For now, the impasse between Trabzonspor and Southampton continues, leaving the player’s future in doubt.
