Bradley Barcola will ‘adapt quicker than Florian Wirtz’ at Liverpool – Jermaine Pennant

Former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant believes Bradley Barcola will adapt to the demands of English football quicker than Florian Wirtz after the French forward’s big-money move to Anfield.

Liverpool completed a £123 million deal to sign Barcola this summer, making the 23-year-old the club’s second-most expensive signing behind Alexander Isak. The France international arrives with considerable expectations but has already shown flashes of the qualities Pennant believes will help him settle rapidly in the Premier League.

Barcola made his Liverpool debut as a substitute in the 2-0 victory over Ipswich before coming close to scoring against Atletico Madrid earlier this week. Although his appearance against the Spanish side lasted only an hour because of cramp, Pennant has been encouraged by what he has seen from the winger.

Pennant explains why Barcola has the edge

Pennant believes Barcola’s pace, strength and position give him an advantage over Wirtz when it comes to adjusting to the intensity of the Premier League.

“I think everyone who comes to the Prem has to adapt differently to their style.

“All the football in the European leagues are nowhere as competitive as they are in the Premier League. But if you look at Barcola’s game, it kind of tailors towards the Premier League. He’s quick, he’s strong for his size and physique and if you’ve got those attributes in the Premier League, you go a long way.”

The former Liverpool winger also drew on his own experience of playing in England, arguing that speed can be a major asset for attackers attempting to cope with the physical demands of the competition.

“I was quick and I wasn’t the strongest but it worked out. I played in the Premier League my whole life.”

Barcola’s direct style and ability to accelerate past defenders are among the qualities Liverpool will expect to benefit from as he becomes increasingly familiar with his new surroundings.

Why Wirtz faces a tougher adjustment

While Wirtz arrived at Liverpool last summer for £116 million, Pennant believes the German faces a more demanding adaptation because of the position he occupies.

Wirtz operates predominantly through central areas, where players are constantly exposed to physical pressure and intense challenges from opponents. Barcola, by contrast, is expected to spend more time in wide positions, where he can use his pace and movement to create space.

“I think he’ll adapt quicker than Florian Wirtz because the position that Wirtz is in, he’s up against the big boys in that middle of the field. That’s where the hard work gets put in. On the wings, it’s a little bit different. It’s not as brutal as it is in the middle.”

Pennant has also been impressed by Barcola’s early outings despite the limited minutes available to him.

“The games that he’s played in, Barcola, the little snippets, I thought he’s done really well.”

Barcola’s next test awaits

Barcola will now hope to build on his promising start as he continues his transition into Liverpool’s first-team setup.

His hour-long appearance against Atletico ended with cramp, meaning attention will now turn to manager Andoni Iraola’s assessment of the forward ahead of the club’s next Premier League fixture against Fulham.

With the pressure of a £123 million price tag already attached to his name, Barcola will be expected to make an impact quickly. Pennant, however, believes the Frenchman’s physical qualities and position could allow him to overcome the adjustment period faster than Wirtz and begin justifying Liverpool’s substantial investment.
