Tottenham suffer Brentford defeat in Roberto De Zerbi’s first Premier League game

Tottenham began the new Premier League season with a disappointing 3-0 defeat by Brentford, offering little evidence of an immediate improvement under new manager Roberto De Zerbi.

Expectations had been raised around Tottenham after the club made several signings during the summer and appointed De Zerbi as their new manager. However, their opening performance ended in familiar frustration, echoing the disappointments of last season.

Brentford took advantage of home-field advantage to secure a convincing victory in the first round of the Premier League. Tottenham struggled to create a meaningful response after falling behind and were unable to find even a consolation goal before the final whistle.

The hosts opened the scoring after 12 minutes through Kevin Lewis-Potter. The attack was built through an impressive team move, which Brentford finished with precision to put Tottenham under early pressure.

Brentford doubled their advantage in the 33rd minute. Vitaly Janelt followed up after the goalkeeper had saved an initial effort, allowing the home side to go into the interval with a two-goal lead.

There was little change after the restart. Tottenham were unable to turn the momentum of the match in their favour, while Brentford continued to threaten in front of goal.

Brentford added a third goal in the second half when Michael Kayode reacted quickest after another shot had been saved by the goalkeeper. His follow-up made it 3-0 and left Tottenham with a substantial deficit to overturn.

The home side were then given an opportunity to score a fourth in the 55th minute after being awarded a penalty. Igor Thiago took responsibility for the spot-kick but struck the post, allowing Tottenham to escape further punishment.

Despite the missed penalty, Brentford remained in complete control for the remainder of the match. Tottenham could not produce a goal, including a consolation effort, during the closing stages and began the campaign with a heavy defeat.

The result gives Brentford an impressive start to their Premier League season, while Tottenham must now look for a response in their next fixture. De Zerbi’s side will play Charlton in the English League Cup in their next match.

Brentford will also turn their attention to the same competition, with Birmingham their opponents in the next round of fixtures.
