Barcelona explored the possibility of signing Yan Diomande before the Ivory Coast winger joined Real Madrid, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Speaking on DAZN, Romano said the Catalan club had examined Diomande’s profile before deciding not to proceed because of the financial demands involved. The player was regarded as one of the most promising young talents of his generation.
Barcelona had reportedly monitored Diomande’s progress for an extended period. His attacking ability and potential had attracted the interest of the club’s recruitment staff, while his record for Ivory Coast stood at 17 international appearances and three goals.
However, the asking price proved to be a significant obstacle. Barcelona ultimately reconsidered its position and did not take negotiations further.
Real Madrid then moved ahead of their rivals with a deal reported to be worth 140 million euros. The size of the transfer reflects the importance the club places on Diomande’s long-term potential, with the winger signing a contract with the Merengues until June 2033.
The timing of the move gives Diomande an immediate opportunity to face the club that had also considered recruiting him. He is expected to start for Real Madrid in the Clasico against Barcelona.
The fixture is scheduled to be Barcelona’s 10th match of the Spanish league season and will take place against Real Madrid. The match therefore offers Diomande the chance to make his involvement in one of football’s biggest rivalries particularly significant.
The quoted pre-match prices were 1.62 for a Barcelona victory, 5.75 for a draw and 3.90 for a Real Madrid win.
