Ligue 2 2026/27: five African players making an early impact

Five African players have emerged as notable attacking performers in Ligue 2 during the opening stages of the 2026/27 season, led by FC Metz striker Pape Moussa Fall, who has scored eight goals in 10 appearances.

The Senegalese forward has been one of the division’s most productive finishers, consistently making the most of his opportunities in front of goal. His form has placed him among the championship’s leading scorers and made him one of the most prominent African players in France’s second tier.

Fall leads the way for Metz

Pape Moussa Fall has quickly established himself as a key attacking figure for FC Metz. His eight goals in 10 Ligue 2 matches underline his efficiency in the penalty area and have made him a player opposing defences must closely monitor.

The Senegal international is currently the leading scorer among the five players highlighted, with his performances providing one of the clearest examples of African influence in the competition this season.

At Stade de Reims, Yaya Fofana has also made a strong start. The Cote d’Ivoire midfielder has scored six goals and supplied two assists, an impressive return for a player whose role is based in the centre of the pitch.

Fofana’s goal tally has placed him among Ligue 2’s leading scorers. His ability to contribute both in front of goal and in the creation of chances has made him one of the players to watch among representatives of Ivorian football in the division.

Balde making the most of limited appearances

Ibrahima Balde has been particularly effective since joining FC Lorient on loan. The Senegalese striker scored five goals in his first four appearances, immediately placing himself among the league’s most efficient attackers.

Balde is on loan at FC Lorient from Rodez AF until the end of the season. His early scoring record has been one of the notable features of the campaign, especially given the limited number of matches in which he has played.

Augustine Boakye has become an important attacking player for AS Saint-Etienne. The Ghana international has recorded six goals and three assists in 10 Ligue 2 appearances.

The midfielder’s figures reflect his influence in Saint-Etienne’s attacking play. Boakye has contributed both through finishing moves and creating opportunities, while his willingness to advance towards goal has added another dimension to the team’s attack.

Brandon Bokangu completes the selection after making a positive impression at En Avant Guingamp. The Congolese striker has scored four goals in nine matches, a return that places him among Ligue 2’s leading scorers.

His contribution has made Bokangu one of the attacking players to follow during the rest of Guingamp’s season.

Together, the five players highlight the strong presence of African talent among Ligue 2’s leading attacking performers. Fall and Fofana stand out for their goal totals, Balde for his efficiency, Boakye for his combined scoring and creative output, and Bokangu for his consistency in front of goal.

Their market values are listed as follows: Pape Moussa Fall, FC Metz, 9 million euros; Yaya Fofana, Stade de Reims, 5 million euros; Ibrahima Balde, FC Lorient, 3 million euros; Augustine Boakye, AS Saint-Etienne, 6 million euros; and Brandon Bokangu, En Avant Guingamp, 600,000 euros.
