“The future is even brighter” – Egypt coach Hossam Hassan after 2026 World Cup exit
Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan has expressed immense pride in his team’s remarkable 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, insisting that “the future will be even better” despite the Pharaohs’ heartbreaking exit in the round of 16.
The North African giants returned home on Friday morning to a hero’s welcome, with thousands of passionate supporters gathering at El Alamein Airport to celebrate the squad’s historic achievements on the world stage.
Speaking to On Sport after the team’s arrival, Hassan thanked the Egyptian faithful for their unwavering support throughout the tournament, saying the joy of the fans was the greatest reward for the players and coaching staff.
“Congratulations to the Egyptian fans. The happiness of the people is the most important thing in the world. They deserve even more than this,” Hassan said.
The former Egypt striker added that seeing the country united behind the national team gave him great satisfaction and optimism for what lies ahead.
“The most important thing for me is that the people are happy and joyful. God willing, the future will be even better.”
Although Egypt’s World Cup dream came to an end with a dramatic 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the round of 16, Hassan’s side left the tournament with their heads held high after producing the nation’s greatest-ever World Cup campaign.
The Pharaohs made history by recording their first-ever victory at the FIFA World Cup and reaching the knockout stage for the first time in their history.
Egypt began their campaign with an impressive 1-1 draw against Belgium before defeating New Zealand 3-1 to secure their maiden World Cup win. They then held Iran to another 1-1 draw, finishing second in Group G to qualify for the knockout rounds.
In the round of 32, Egypt overcame Australia in a tense penalty shootout after the match ended 1-1, sealing a historic place in the last 16.
Their journey ended in unforgettable fashion against Argentina. The Pharaohs stunned the South American giants by racing into a two-goal lead before Argentina mounted a spirited comeback to claim a 3-2 victory in one of the most entertaining matches of the tournament.
Despite the disappointment of elimination, Egypt’s performances earned widespread praise from fans and football observers alike, with the team’s resilience, attacking football and fearless displays signalling a bright future under Hossam Hassan.
The emotional reception at El Alamein Airport reflected the nation’s appreciation for a team that rewrote Egyptian football history and restored belief that even greater achievements are possible in the years ahead.
