Thabo Moloisane dismisses ‘heavy jersey’ myth as Kaizer Chiefs defender prepares for emotional Stellenbosch reunion
Kaizer Chiefs defender Thabo Moloisane has dismissed the long-standing notion that the Soweto giants’ famous black-and-gold jersey carries an extra burden, insisting that hard work and belief in his ability matter more than the pressure associated with playing for the club.
The 27-year-old, who joined Amakhosi from Stellenbosch ahead of the current season, believes his upbringing in Soweto has helped him understand the club’s identity and expectations.
Moloisane’s comments come ahead of Kaizer Chiefs’ meeting with his former club Stellenbosch at FNB Stadium on Tuesday night, with kick-off scheduled for 19:00.
The centre-back is preparing for an emotionally charged encounter against the side that provided the platform for his rise to one of South Africa’s biggest clubs.
‘There’s no jersey that’s bigger than you’
The idea of a “heavy jersey” frequently emerges when new signings struggle to adapt to the demands of playing for Kaizer Chiefs, whose enormous following and history of success bring considerable expectations.
Moloisane, however, has rejected the notion that wearing the Amakhosi shirt presents an intimidating challenge, arguing that players must trust their abilities and continue working hard.
“I don’t know… maybe it’s because I am a boy from Soweto, I don’t think there’s such a thing as a heavy jersey. For me, it’s to continue working hard. In Soweto there’s no jersey that’s bigger than you,” Moloisane said at Naturena on Monday.
The defender believes his place in the squad reflects his ability to perform at the highest level and is determined to justify the faith the club has placed in him.
“I was chosen because I deserve to be here, I was chosen because I am capable, so I will continue to show my talent.
“Fortunately enough for me, this is the club that I know. I grew up just down the road from here [Naturena], so there’s deep love I have for Chiefs. Growing up this is literally all I knew… I remember as a small boy coming to fetch tickets here, so for me it is to write my own history at this club, to bring back the glory days.”
His connection to the club stretches back to childhood, making his move to Naturena more than just another step in his professional career.
Having grown up close to the club’s headquarters, Moloisane now has the opportunity to contribute to the team he supported as a young boy and help restore its former standing.
Stellenbosch reunion carries emotional weight
While Moloisane is focused on making his mark at Chiefs, he has acknowledged the significance of facing Stellenbosch, the club that played a crucial role in his development.
The defender expressed gratitude to his former employers for helping him reach the level required to earn a move to Naturena, while also recognising the opportunity Chiefs have given him.
“Tomorrow [tonight] is going to be a bit emotional of course. They [Stellies] played a big role in my career… in my journey to get here. It’s going to be fun for me, personally because I enjoy this type of games,” the Amakhosi centre-back stated.
Moloisane is keen to approach the fixture with the competitive spirit required, despite the personal connections that will make the occasion special.
“It’s only fair to start by saying I am grateful to Stellenbosch for the role they played in my career, to get to where I am. I am also grateful to Chiefs for giving me the opportunity to represent such a big club.”
Defender targets his own chapter at Naturena
Moloisane’s immediate focus will be on helping Kaizer Chiefs secure a positive result against Stellenbosch, but his ambitions extend beyond Tuesday’s fixture.
The defender wants to establish himself at the Soweto club and contribute to its efforts to reclaim the success that has defined its history.
His rejection of the “heavy jersey” narrative reflects his belief that commitment, confidence and consistent performances are the keys to meeting expectations at a club of Chiefs’ stature.
Against Stellenbosch, he will face a familiar opponent while continuing his own journey with the club he grew up supporting.
