Inacio Miguel’s discipline under scrutiny after latest Kaizer Chiefs red card

Inacio Miguel’s latest dismissal, in one of Kaizer Chiefs’ biggest fixtures of the season, has renewed debate over whether the Angolan defender’s combative style reflects misplaced passion or is becoming a costly liability for Amakhosi. Miguel has collected 21 yellow cards in 64 appearances for the club.

The 30-year-old was sent off in stoppage time during Chiefs’ 2-1 Soweto Derby defeat by Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium on 31 October 2026. He received a second yellow card around 10 minutes after being booked for the first time.

The dismissal means Miguel will miss two important matches. He is suspended for the Carling Knockout quarter-final against Siwelele FC on 6 November and the Betway Premiership away fixture against Chippa United after the international break.

His latest ban takes the number of matches he has missed because of disciplinary issues since joining Chiefs at Naturena to six.

Miguel will also return from suspension with three yellow cards already recorded this season. The derby dismissal does not remove those cautions, leaving him one booking away from another suspension. The cards came in matches against Mamelodi Sundowns, Siwelele FC and Stellenbosch FC during the 2026/27 campaign.

That record will concern the Chiefs technical team, particularly given the defender’s difficult disciplinary history at the club.

Miguel was suspended twice within his first six matches at Naturena. His initial ban followed four yellow cards, while the second came after he was sent off against Mamelodi Sundowns in a Carling Knockout defeat in November 2024.

For a time, his record appeared to improve. His next four cautions were spread over 21 matches, indicating that he was managing the more aggressive aspects of his game with greater control.

However, the 2025/26 season saw a return to previous patterns. Miguel received 10 yellow cards, including eight in 16 Betway Premiership appearances and two in CAF Confederation Cup matches.

Those bookings resulted in two domestic suspensions. He missed the fixture against Orbit College on 6 April 2026 and another match after being booked in the sixth minute against Magesi on 21 March 2026.

The figures are significant for a player expected to provide leadership and stability at the centre of the Chiefs defence.

Miguel’s physical approach has nevertheless brought clear value to Amakhosi. The experienced international defender is willing to challenge opponents, commit to tackles and impose himself in demanding situations. That mentality can be particularly important in a match such as the Soweto Derby.

But Chiefs need Miguel available for their most important fixtures, rather than serving suspensions. His latest red card against Pirates was especially costly because his experience and presence could have been valuable in such a key match.

The issue now is whether Miguel can continue to use his aggression effectively, or whether his disciplinary record is becoming a persistent weakness in his game.
