Tembo embraces ‘great honour’ as he steps in to lead Zimbabwe at crucial moment
Kaitano Tembo has pledged to build on existing foundations after being appointed interim head coach of the Zimbabwe national team, describing the opportunity as both a privilege and a responsibility at a critical juncture for the Warriors.
The former Zimbabwe international was named as a swift replacement for Marian Marinica, who vacated the role earlier this week in unexpected circumstances.
His appointment comes with immediate demands, as Zimbabwe gear up for the upcoming Unity Cup in London, a tournament expected to test the team’s readiness and cohesion.
Tembo is no stranger to the national team environment, having previously worked within the set-up, and that familiarity is expected to ease his transition into the top job.
He will be supported by Takesure Chiragwi, the current Caps United head coach, as the technical team looks to steady the side during a period of change.
“It is a great honour and responsibility,” Tembo said following his appointment, acknowledging both the weight of expectation and the significance of the role. “I want to thank ZIFA for the trust they have shown in me.”
Zimbabwe’s immediate focus will be on assembling a competitive squad capable of delivering in London, with limited time for preparation. The Unity Cup offers Tembo an early opportunity to stamp his authority while maintaining continuity in approach and structure.
“Having worked within the national team set-up, I understand the expectations and the pride that comes with leading the Warriors,” he added, underlining his connection to the team and its supporters.
The interim coach has also made clear his intention to avoid wholesale changes, instead prioritising stability as he seeks to guide the team forward. “I am fully committed to serving the country and building on the work that has already been done.”
