Taarabt criticizes Regragui’s coaching style: A divisive figure in Moroccan football
Adel Taarabt, a seasoned Moroccan international, has stirred the football community with his candid remarks about Walid Regragui, the current coach of the Atlas Lions. Known for his forthright opinions, Taarabt did not mince words when discussing Regragui during a recent video interview with Hespress. The 35-year-old midfielder, who now plays for Al-Nasr in the UAE, expressed his clear disapproval of his former teammate.
“I never got along with Walid Regragui. Even when we were teammates, I didn’t like playing with him. I don’t like his style of play,” Taarabt said, leaving no room for ambiguity about his feelings towards Regragui.
This statement underscores the polarizing nature of Regragui’s role in Moroccan football, with fans and players alike divided in their opinions.
Previous Criticism During the 2022 World Cup
This isn’t the first time Taarabt has voiced his discontent with Regragui. Following Morocco’s impressive run to the semi-finals in the 2022 World Cup, Taarabt criticized the coach’s tactics during a live Twitter session with Soccer 212.
Reflecting on the match against Spain, which Morocco won on penalties after a 0-0 draw, Taarabt was critical of the team’s approach.
“I think you can no longer have an identity. When you see the match against Spain, it was 72 to 28 [in possession].
There was a need for a result like this. But I think with the players you have… They played with guts. But in terms of play, of creating chances, I think that Morocco must still do better,” Taarabt remarked.
His comments highlighted a belief that, despite the historic victory, the team’s style of play left much to be desired.
Possible Personal Grievances?
Taarabt’s criticisms might also be fueled by personal grievances. After being recalled to the national team by Vahid Halilhodzic in June 2022, Taarabt was subsequently overlooked by Regragui, Halilhodzic’s successor.
This omission could explain the bitterness evident in Taarabt’s remarks, as he has yet to receive a call-up under Regragui’s tenure.
Despite these tensions, Regragui’s leadership has undeniably brought significant success to the Atlas Lions.
As the coach continues to lead Morocco, his style and decisions will remain a topic of debate, especially among vocal critics like Taarabt.
This ongoing discourse reflects the passionate engagement of Morocco’s football community with their national team’s fortunes and strategies.
