Kaizer Chiefs utility player Steven Mendes says he was surprised to be deployed as a striker during South Africa’s successful U20 COSAFA Cup campaign.

Mendes, who generally plays in midfield, adapted quickly to the unfamiliar position and finished the tournament as the leading scorer with six goals.

His most important strike came in the final against Mozambique, when he scored the winning goal to secure the title for Amajita. South Africa’s victory also earned them qualification for the 2027 U20 Africa Cup of Nations.

“Even for me, it was a bit of a surprise, playing striker. I had to adapt quickly, making sure I provide for the team, in which I scored goals. That’s the striker’s job and I think I did that well,” said Mendes.

The Kaizer Chiefs youngster made his first appearance for the national team at a major tournament and said representing South Africa had been a special experience.

“It was my first major competition for the national team. Obviously, it’s a great feeling, a feeling that I want to experience a lot more. Hopefully, I can experience that again in the future.”

Mendes’ performances earned him the Golden Boot, but he played down the focus on his individual achievements and instead highlighted the contribution of the entire squad.

The 20-year-old said the team’s success was built on the commitment of every player throughout the competition.

“At the end of the day, it’s a team effort. Everyone gave their all, everyone contributed. It’s just a team effort at the end of the day.”
