South African teenager Liam Marthinus trains with Mamelodi Sundowns senior team
South African teenage sensation Liam Marthinus has been promoted to train with Mamelodi Sundowns senior team.
The 17-year-old, who gained prominence at the U17 Africa Cup of Nations has been tipped to reach greater heights of football career.
Marthinus represented South African at the U17 AFCON tournament early this year and delivered an outstanding performance.
Having gained the chance to train with Sundowns team, the left-footed central defender will be hoping to cement a place in the team.
Hailing from Elsies River, Cape Town, Marthinus is noted for his passing range, calmness and physical strength.
Known for their talented nurturing ability, Sundowns will be hoping to guide the promising defender to reach the highest level in his career.
Meanwhile, Sundowns sporting director, Flemming Berg, has confirmed the club’s commitment to giving young players a chance in the senior team.
“In season 2021/2022, Sundowns was the team in the senior league with clearly fewest U21 homegrown minutes at all,” Berg said on his X account. “The time when Sundowns didn’t play young players have passed – we develop and prepare them for the highest national and international level,” he added.
Malibongwe Khoza (21), Kutlwano Letlaku (19), Gomolemo Kekana (19), Siyabonga Mabena (18), and most recently, Bennet Mokoena (19) have all played in the Betway Premiership this season.
