South African Premiership title race heads to final weekend after Orlando Pirates stumble
The South African Premiership title race will go down to the final weekend of the season after Orlando Pirates failed to take full control, settling for a goalless draw against Durban City at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday.
What was expected to be a decisive step towards a long-awaited championship instead opened the door for Mamelodi Sundowns, who now sit in a commanding position to extend their dominance.
For Pirates, the result extends an anxious wait for a league crown that has eluded them since the 2011/12 campaign, setting up a tense finale that leaves little margin for error.
Orlando Pirates entered the fixture knowing victory would have taken them to the summit and placed them on the brink of ending a 5,110-day title drought. They dominated early proceedings, controlling possession with authority and dictating the tempo almost from the first whistle.
The Buccaneers enjoyed 76% possession in the first half alone and won 10 corners before the interval, the highest recorded by any side in a single half this season. However, despite territorial superiority, their control rarely translated into genuine penetration against a well-organised Durban City block.
Durban City arrived with discipline and a clear defensive structure, prioritising containment over ambition as they chased a top-eight finish rather than the title. Their compact shape frustrated Pirates throughout, forcing the hosts into speculative attempts from distance that failed to trouble goalkeeper Fredrick Asare.
As pressure mounted, Pirates’ play became increasingly hurried and uncertain, reflecting the weight of expectation. Relebohile Mofokeng went closest with a free-kick that drew a strong save, while Oswin Appollis spurned a promising opening from a tight angle as the breakthrough continued to elude them.
As the stalemate persisted, the broader implications became unavoidable. The dropped points effectively handed Mamelodi Sundowns a significant advantage heading into the final round of fixtures, where Pirates now must secure victory against Orbit College to remain in contention.
Anything short of three points will confirm Sundowns as champions once again. The frustration will also linger over earlier missteps in the campaign, with costly home draws against Siwelele FC, Richards Bay, and now Durban City potentially defining the outcome of a tightly contested season.
For Durban City, the result capped a remarkable debut top-flight campaign. The point effectively seals a top-eight finish, complementing their already secured Nedbank Cup triumph and qualification for next season’s MTN8.
What began as a survival mission has evolved into one of the season’s standout stories, with the newly promoted side establishing themselves as a resilient and competitive force in the division.
