Sofiane Boufal opens up on future; refuses to force Morocco return
Sofiane Boufal has sparked discussion about his international future after making it clear that his immediate priority lies with helping Le Havre AC avoid relegation rather than chasing a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In statements published on the club’s official website, the 30-year-old winger emphasised a team-first mentality, insisting that collective success outweighs any personal ambitions.
“The most important thing is not my personal situation, but the team and the goal of Le Havre remaining in the French league,” he said.
Boufal also highlighted his professionalism and readiness to contribute in any role assigned by the coaching staff.
“If the coach decides to rest me, I understand that completely. Whether I am a starter or a substitute, I am ready to fight for the team and give my best.” He added, “Competition is part of the game, and everyone has to fight!”
The Moroccan international reserved special praise for the club’s technical leadership, applauding the guidance and trust he has received during a crucial stage of his career.
“I have a very good relationship with the technical director, and he is an excellent coach. Tactically, he is among the best in the French league!”
He continued, “He gave me a lot of confidence and showed me great appreciation at a time when I really needed it… and the same goes for Mathieu Bodmer and (Momo) Al-Kharraz. I am very happy and proud to belong to this team.”
In one of his most striking remarks, Boufal dismissed suggestions that his move to Le Havre was motivated by World Cup ambitions.
“When I signed with Le Havre, I didn’t do it to go to the World Cup. What I liked was the speech of the coach and the officials within the club,” he noted.
He further underlined his grounded approach to international selection, stating, “As for the national team, things shouldn’t be forced; everything will come naturally. I don’t wake up in the morning thinking about the need to go to the World Cup… the pitch will do the talking!” He added, “I only focus on my work on the field, and I try to do my best to serve my team in every match.”
Looking ahead, Boufal also left the door open regarding his club future, expressing satisfaction with life at Le Havre and hinting at a possible extension.
“My staying? Of course, that’s a possibility. I’m very happy here, it’s a club I appreciate very much. I’m not closing any doors,” Boufal added.
