Sofiane Boufal targets Morocco return for 2026 World Cup
Moroccan winger Sofiane Boufal says he still hopes to earn a place in Morocco’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after rediscovering his form with French side Le Havre.
Since joining the Ligue 1 club in January, Boufal has steadily rebuilt his rhythm following several difficult seasons affected by inconsistency and physical setbacks.
His performances have quickly made an impact, with the former Atlas Lions star becoming an important figure in Didier Digard’s team.
The 31-year-old’s strong return to form was recognised when he was voted Le Havre’s player of the month for February, underlining the influence he has had since arriving at the club.
Boufal’s technical quality and attacking creativity have helped him regain confidence, while regular playing time has also allowed him to improve his physical condition.
Speaking to Foot Mercato, the Moroccan international admitted that representing his country at another World Cup remains a major personal objective.
Boufal, who has already experienced major tournaments with Morocco, said the possibility of returning to the international stage continues to motivate him.
“I’m lucky to be able to play a series of matches without physical problems, to get back into form. So it’s an objective. Especially with my history with Morocco, the competitions I’ve been able to do, the experience I’ve been able to gain,” he said.
Boufal’s comments reflect both his ambition and his awareness of the challenges ahead, with competition for places in Morocco’s squad expected to remain intense ahead of the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Despite keeping his World Cup hopes alive, the winger stressed that his immediate focus remains on helping Le Havre secure their Ligue 1 status.
The Moroccan international made it clear that club objectives currently take priority as the French side continue their battle to remain in the top flight.
At the same time, Boufal insisted his support for the national team would remain unchanged regardless of whether he is selected for the tournament.
His statement highlighted his continued attachment to the Atlas Lions and his desire to contribute whenever possible.
Having regained momentum in Ligue 1, Boufal now hopes his recent performances can reopen the door to international football and potentially earn him another opportunity with Morocco on the world stage.
