Simba SC coach Steve Barker clinches first Tanzania award amid unbeaten run
South African tactician Steve Barker has secured his first individual accolade in Tanzania after being named Coach of the Month in the NBC Premier League, marking a significant milestone since taking charge of Simba SC.
Barker, who left Stellenbosch FC in December after nearly a decade at the Cape Winelands outfit, has made an immediate impact in East African football. Since his arrival, Simba have surged into strong form, going nine matches unbeaten and climbing up the league standings to solidify their position among the title contenders.
The Tanzanian League confirmed Barker’s recognition this week, highlighting his impressive run that saw Simba win two matches and draw one during the month under review. His tactical influence has been evident, with the team rising from sixth to third place in the standings—an achievement that underlined his growing influence at the club.
Despite currently sitting second in the league, Simba’s resurgence has been fueled by consistency and defensive discipline, making them one of the most in-form teams in the competition. Barker edged out competition from Pedro Goncalves of Young Africans SC and Florent Ibenge of Azam FC to claim the award.
Besides, Laurindo Dilson ‘Depu’ of Young Africans was named Player of the Month after scoring two goals in two matches, helping his side maintain their grip at the top of the table. He beat Simba defender Rushine De Reuck and Azam midfielder Idd Selemani to the award.
Barker’s early success signals a promising new chapter in his coaching career, as he continues to stamp his authority at Simba. With momentum firmly on their side, the South African coach will now be aiming to sustain the unbeaten run and mount a serious challenge for the NBC Premier League title.
